bob e asked:

OK, please no newb or pwned crap, I would just really like some help. I have a slow mace in my main hand,, fast dagger in my off hand, i’m level 64 Rogue, I use poisons, gather agility, critical strike, and attack power gear, but yet my friends mage (same level) kills me in 2 shots in duel. He says I have PVE gear not PVP gear. Well, whats the difference? What do I want?I’m specced in combat. My crit chance is around 20% but I dont understand hit, or power either. I just went to A dungeon, and got pissed because everytone started yelling that I wasnt doing enough DPS or I wasnt assisting the tank. I guess I’m not really understanding whats the best spec, what kind of weapons, what kind of gear, pretty much…………the whole damn class! BTW, I got to 64 by using the refer a friend bonuses, so no, i’m not very skilled in this game yet. THanks guys, and again, please no newb comments. I know I am, no need to think ur the first to tell me I am.

I haven’t played a rogue in a while but I’ll answer what I can. First of all you are still only 64, you don’t have all the skills to properly hold up against certain classes in pvp. Addressing the “what is the difference between pve and pvp question” pve gear focuses more on stats (agility etc) and crit and attack power, while pvp gear focuses more on resilience and stamina. Resilience will keep you from taken a ton of damage from attacks. If you go to your character panel by hitting C in game, click one of the down arrows above your stats (agility/stamina/etc) and click “defenses” resilience is there.

What you want to do as a rogue is up to you. You need to choose what gear to go after and figure out what you need to do to acheive that gear. Once you know that I can help you more on talents and such.

The more hit rating you have the less chance your attacks will “miss” as I’m sure you have had happen. I’m not sure of the exact number of hit rating for a rogue, and I will look it up later when I get home from work. (sites are blocked here)

Attack power or AP as its called increases the damage you do with attacks and depending on talents may affect other stats. The actual AP mechanics are listed on wowwiki.com I believe.

In dungeons, you want to assist the tank always, unless otherwise instructed to do. This means if the tank is tanking 2 or more mobs, you need to be attacking the one the tank specifies as the kill target. Most groups use raid icons, and this makes things easier. Only the leader of the group can use them though. Sometimes you will be asked to sap or blind or stunlock a target. If this is the case, just do what they ask. Try not to get frustrated with a group, and usually they won’t get frustrated with you.

Lack of DPS is usually a matter of difference between the mobs level and your level, gear, or talents. If you’re a lower level than everyone else and the mobs are orange or even red to you, you will struggle to dps because you won’t hit as hard and you will miss more (this is where hit rating comes in.) Gear is something that can be fixed but takes time, be patient, and make wise choices. Sometimes you will find (especially while leveling) that some blue gear is surpassed by higher level green gear. Don’t be afraid to switch out the blue for the green. At 80 you will start building blue and purple sets from higher level dungeons. Talents are a big part of a class. What you spec depends on what you do. In dungeons you want to hit quickly and very hard. (Like I said I’m not sure about rogues too much anymore, but will research more when I get home) In pvp you will want to have numerous cooldowns through preperation in the Subtlety tree. But you dont need to worry about that now.

If you want to email me at feel free. I’m on Akama server. Horde. Mage/Shaman/DeathKnight

Use the WoW armory to look for upgrades to gear, or search through thottbot.com or wowhead.com
